A Global Estimate Of Benefits From Ecosystem-Based Marine Recreation - Potential Impacts And Implications For Management

 

More and more, people are participating in recreational activities around marine ecosystems. This study investigates the benefits of marine-based recreational pursuits, considering participation, employment and direct expenditure by participants in 144 coastal countries. The authors estimate that 121 million people a year participate in marine-based recreational activities, generating 47 billion USD in expenditures and supporting one million jobs. This study also considers potential drivers for participation, as well as ecological impacts of these activities.
