Understanding the Scale of the Problem

A keen fisher, Craig Lees recently asked Recfishing Research about a 95cm snook he caught and released near Ceduna. He explained that whilst handling the fish before release quite a few scales came off in his hand, and the fish seemed to take a while to recover before swimming away. Craig wondered if the scale loss would cause long term damage to the fish.

 

Understanding the scale of the problem: does it matter if fish lose their scales whilst being handled?
