Recreational fishing is big business in Australia. A survey in 2001-02 estimated that Aussie fishos spent a whopping $1.8 billion on rec fishing over the 12 month study period. Unfortunately, there hasn't been an assessment of the economic value of recreational fishing in Australia since that survey around 15 year ago, and much has changed since then. There is a need to undertake another survey to understand the economic contribution that recreational fishing makes to today’s society.
This project explores various methods for estimating the value of fishing in Australia, and discusses their relative benefits and disadvantages to determine the best way forward.
